Shenzhen is a good base for seeing the rest of China. High-speed trains reach Guangzhou in half an hour, and the national network puts most of the country within a day’s travel – Guilin, Xiamen, Hong Kong, and with an overnight or a short flight, Xi’an, Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and the historic heart of the country in Henan.
Travelling in China has become much easier for foreign visitors recently. Visa-free entry and transit have been expanded for many nationalities, Alipay and WeChat Pay now accept foreign credit cards, and train and attraction tickets can be booked with a passport through apps such as Trip.com or the official Railway 12306 app. A translation app and a VPN sorted out before you arrive will both help.
