Athletics at Universiade
Yesterday I went to the second day of the athletics competition for the Universiade in Longgang district. It was a very beautiful and hot Shenzhen summer day. I was sitting close to the Women's far jump, but could also see the track events good. During the 10K there was a Russian athlete who was way faster than everyone else from lap 1. He lapped most athletes and number 2 (a Japanese runner) was more than 150 meters behind. Two laps before the end I noticed he started to run more difficult, but with 1 lap to go he still had a big lead.

Most Universiade events sold out
The tickets for popular events of the Universiade have been sold out. It is no longer possible to buy the tickets online for any event. For events that are less popular or take place in the large stadiums there are still tickets, but you have to go to the physical ticket offices to buy them. If you want to watch swimming, badminton, Chinese basketball then you are probably out of luck.
Women artistic gymnastics
Today we went to the group phase of the women's artistic gymnastics event. We took the metro to the stadium in Bao'an and because we had our Universiade tickets already with us, we could travel for free! Just show your ticket and you can use a special Universiade passage way. The ticket is also valid for the way back, so keep your ticket! We arrived quite early in Bao'an and even though we had to pass security, there were no queues at that time yet.

Shops harmonized, guards in appartments and huge busstop
I walked outside today and noticed something strange: the real-estate agents removed all their advertisements in the windows. At first it was just one shop, but now all 3 shops in this street have removed the advertisements. The lady selling breakfast (baozi, soy-bean milk etc) said they had to put everything inside; she officially was not even allowed to put her food on the street. So I paid more attention and also the drug-store downstairs has removed all their advertisements from the window.

You might think that I live along some major Universiade street, but no: not in a thousand years will any Universiade athlete or visitor come to our street; those shops are not visible at all from the major roads. This is typical Chinese style.

Glimpse of Universiade Flame
Everyday I pass the location of the Opening Ceremony for the Universiade by bus. Today when I went home I noticed that the scaffolding around the Universiade Flame was removed. Furthermore several balloons in the shape of the Universiade logo have been put up. I also noticed quite a lot of army vehicles, mostly hidden behind some bushes or on side roads. Normally you don't see much army in Shenzhen, so this attracts attention. I again saw the artillery, but couldn't get a good photo of it :( As these photos were taken from a moving bus, the image quality is not so good :

Raining in Shenzhen
With only 3 days to go till the opening ceremony it is raining in Shenzhen. It felt a bit cooler today than the previous days so that's nice and it's also good for the newly planted vegetation. The weather forecast for Friday is looking pretty good and it will probably be dry. This morning in the bus I saw that the Chinese army setup lots of artillery guns next to Binhe road. I will try to take a photo of those tomorrow. Today I took these photo from our office of the approaching rainstorm:

Photos Universiade village and stadiums
Today (Monday the 8th of August) I took the metro to the Universiade Village in Longgang district. From one of the Dutch organizers I already heard the area is totally fenced off and has lots of security, but it was even more than I expected. This area of Shenzhen is quite remote and it took about an hour from downtown Shenzhen. The universiade village is huge and the stadiums look beautiful. It was impossible to get closer than a few hundred meters to the stadiums, so I only took photos from the outside.

Final beautification Shenzhen
Shenzhen has started a final push to make the city as beautiful as possible before the start of the Universiade. I take the bus from Futian to Nanshan every day and the past couple of days I saw tens of workers placing thousands and thousands of new flowers along Binhe road (the road near the Cocoon venue). They have also gave the footbridges over this road a new look. Even the pillars below flyovers have been decorated with big banners for the Universiade and even small communities have gotten Universiade stickers. Universiade U-boots have also been popping up across the city and getting more visitors.

Universiade problems
The Shenzhen Universiade 2011 will no doubt have a beautiful Opening Ceremony. Also no doubt that the stadiums will all be finished in time and the facilities will be world class. There are 250 thousand (!) volunteers for the Universiade, so that can also not be the cause for problems. The city has undergone several facelifts and all the major roads and houses along those roads now look better than ever before. Visitors will certainly get a good impression of Shenzhen just by looking out of their buses. So what can cause problems?

Sports programmes Universiade
The Sports Programmes for the Universiade 2011 in Shenzhen has been published, but it's a bit difficult to find on the official Universiade website. So I'll summarize when each sport event takes place and in which venues.

Buy tickets Universiade
The Universiade is only 83 days away and the stadiums are almost finished. Indirectly I have also learned that tickets will probably go on sale soon: members of the various national teams can apply till Monday the 23rd of May for extra tickets. After this date, extra tickets will only be handed out at the venues but there will likely not be enough tickets:

"According to the tickets policy, during Games-time, the Organizing Committee (OC) will distribute a number of complementary tickets to the delegations. However, the demand of delegations is likely to be greater than the actual supply of the complementary tickets. To ensure the delegations could purchase the demanding tickets in time, we strongly suggest the delegations submit the attachment of Contractual Client System Account Application Form before 23th May. "

So I think the official ticket sale will start within the next two weeks.

Photos progress universiade venues
At the end of February 2011 the first lights test was held at the Universiade venues in Longgang district. We went there several months ago when the steel frames were just visible and amazing progress has been made in the meantime. I pass the main venue in Nanshan district everyday when I go to work and it also looks great. The city has also installed countdown clocks to the opening of the Universiade games. Today still 145 days to go! Unfortunately no word yet on how to buy tickets, but I have contacted the organizers to get more information about this. According to a previous schedule, the tickets were supposed to go on sale in early 2011.

Universiade one year countdown
Yesterday, Thursday the 12th of August 2010, marked the one-year countdown towards the Universiade of 2011 in Shenzhen , though the games actually will start the 8th of August 2011. The celebrations were attended by about 30.000 people including overseas students, consuls and athletes. I also found out that tickets will probably go on sale early next year. The organizers have also launched a totally renewed English website for the Universiade with new information and a better design. Glad to see some developments here as well!

Photos construction stadiums Nanshan
Today, the 27th of February 2010, we went to the construction site of a major Universiade 2011 stadium in Nanshan district in Shenzhen: the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center. Construction is already well under way, but the steel structure has not been completely finished. The final shape is already clearly visible and it looks like another very impressive stadium.

Photos construction stadiums Longgang

Even though the universiade in Shenzhen will only start in August 2011, you can already see that the city is busy preparing for this important event. At the 5th of December 2009 we went to the construction site of the new stadiums in Longgang district to see the progress and took lots of photos.
