Today I made whole wheat oatmeal cookies according to some recipe I found online. They tasted good and are very healthy, so I wanted to recommend them here. They were also quite easy to make with ingredients easily available in supermarkets in Shenzhen.

My wife has hired a yuesao (sort of midwife) to help her during the first month after pregnancy (called yuezi). She has lots of special traditional recipes to help mom recover and to stimulate milk-production. Today the first in this series: pig feet stewed in vinegar with lots of ginger.

A traditional Dutch recipe this time: pancakes! Very simple to make and taste very good. Dutch pancakes are much thinner and lighter than American pancakes. We often put fruit inside such as raisins, apple or banana. It's also possible to combine it with cheese or bacon, but in this recipe I just make the fruit-version.

Winter melon is a huge vegetable of which you usually buy one very thick slice in the supermarket. In this dish we chop the winter melon into large cubes and bake it with some bacon. The bacon gives a little bit extra flavor to this vegetable. Very simple to make.

Tofu with pepper and pork is one of my favorite dishes. It's quite easy to make and has a nice bite to it. It's not too spicy, but has very nice flavors. If you don't watch out, you keep on eating it. Important for this dish is the kind of tofu. We use "five spice tofu" and then the non-smoked version.

Cantonese mushroom bone soup is made of a large pig leg bone, chopped in big chunks. The typical Cantonese influence comes from the herbs you need to add. It's a simple recipe (if you can find the Cantonese flavoring) that doesn't require much attention and can be prepared well in advance.

Water bamboo (also called "wild rice stem") is a typical Chinese vegetable. It looks like regular bamboo shoots, but then narrower. In fact it's really the bottom part of a specially infected rice plant. The outer parts need to be removed, since only the inside white flesh is eaten. In this dish it's sliced and stir fried with pepper and pork.

Stir fried carrots are another common dish in China. It's again easy to make, but tastes very good. It's also very different from how carrot is prepared in the West.

Snow pea with sausage is another very simple dish but it tastes good. It's typical home-style cooking and common throughout China. Snow peas are also called "helan dou" or Dutch beans in China. We use a Cantonese style sweet sausage for this dish.

Lotus root meatballs are very simple to make and a nice variation on the typical meatballs found in Western dishes. The lotus root pieces give a nice crunchy bite to the meatballs and a little ginger makes it taste fresher. Full recipe below
